Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex mental health condition often marked by frequent emergency visits and psychiatric admissions, especially when patients lack access to timely, outpatient care. In response to these challenges, Windsor Regional Hospital and the Canadian Mental Health Association – Windsor-Essex are launching a new BPD Outpatient Clinic to provide coordinated, evidence-based treatment after discharge. This quality improvement project will assess emergency and inpatient service use before and after the clinic’s implementation, creating a baseline to measure the clinic’s long-term impact on patient outcomes, care continuity, and hospital resource use.
By addressing a chronic gap in outpatient care, this project aims to reduce unnecessary emergency department visits and psychiatric admissions for individuals living with BPD. It supports more consistent, trauma-informed care that enhances symptom management, quality of life, and healthcare system efficiency. Outcomes will help guide future expansion of BPD care pathways in Windsor-Essex and beyond.
