Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a serious, lifelong condition that can cause significant health complications, yet individuals living with SCD often face barriers to timely, equitable care due to stigma, systemic racism, and gaps in provider knowledge. This quality improvement project at Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) seeks to better understand how patients with SCD are currently treated by examining emergency department and inpatient data from the past two years. Informed by this review, the team will co-develop inclusive, culturally sensitive educational resources for both patients and healthcare providers.

This initiative will help reduce healthcare disparities for individuals living with SCD by increasing awareness, improving care coordination, and providing accessible resources. It will also equip WRH staff with the knowledge to deliver timely and informed care, aligning with the hospital’s equity and quality improvement goals.
