This project explores how community recreation programming fosters social connection, engagement, and collective well-being. Using the Toldo Lancer Centre as the research site, the study will examine the emotional, physical, and social benefits of recreational participation across diverse demographic groups. Through focus groups with community members, including newcomers, older adults, and marginalized youth, the team will gather insights into participants’ experiences, barriers to access, and the broader social meaning of recreation. Guided by ecological systems theory and a critical social science lens, the study will investigate how different environmental and cultural factors influence engagement. The findings will inform inclusive recreation programming and contribute to our understanding of how community-based sport and leisure spaces can support healthier, more connected populations.

This research will offer evidence-based recommendations to design inclusive, community-driven recreation programs that promote health and belonging. The findings are expected to inform local policy and guide the development of equitable programming in shared public spaces.
