core principal researcher
Dr. Afshin Rahimi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Automotive, and Materials Engineering at the University of Windsor. He completed his B.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering at K.N. Toosi University of Technology, followed by his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University. Prior to joining the University of Windsor in 2018, he worked as a Data Scientist and DPHM Analyst at Pratt & Whitney Canada.
Dr. Rahimi’s research specializes in model-based and data-driven fault detection, diagnostics, and prognosis, alongside machine learning and intelligent systems. While rooted in aerospace and mechanical engineering, his work has significant multidisciplinary and public safety applications. His research teams leverage artificial intelligence and computer vision to improve human safety, detect personal protective equipment (PPE) compliance, and mitigate human error in industrial environments. His work also extends to environmental health, utilizing autonomous UAVs for monitoring water health and building predictive models for smart, sustainable cities.
He is deeply committed to student mentorship, experiential learning, and international collaboration, regularly supervising students through programs such as the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship.
