Erie Shores HealthCare (ESHC) has witnessned a substantial increase in opioid-related emergency department (ED) visits in recent years. Access to naloxone has been shown to reduce fatal opioid overdoses. Introducing the Ontario Naloxone Program (ONP) to Leamington, Ontario through distribution of take-home naloxone kits from the ED will increase access to this potentially lifesaving medication, obtaining insights into the effectiveness of the ONP and provide increased accessibility for patients most at risk.
Introducing the ONP to ESHC in Leamington, Ontario has the potential to reduce the amount of ED visits from patient populations most at risk of an overdose, as well as increase the number of lives saved.
