Wearing lab coats and curiosity on their sleeves, some of the region’s top high school science students gathered at the University of Windsor last week for the 12th annual Science Academy.

Sixty students from across Windsor-Essex who recently completed Grade 11 took part in the five-day event, held July 7 to 11.

The program gives participants a firsthand look at the hands-on learning and research opportunities available in the Faculty of Science.

Each day featured interactive activities, scientific experiments and department-led lab tours, with each unit in the Faculty of Science taking a turn to shine. Students also toured the campus, explored extracurricular activities, and connected with student clubs.

Midweek, participants competed in the “Amazing Science Race,” which saw teams dash through a series of science-themed challenges.

Mina Ghafoori, a student from W.F. Herman Academy, called the experience unforgettable.

“We got to put a flower in dry ice and smash it on the table,” she said. “Yesterday, we looked at our fingerprints and solved a crime by finding clues. It’s been so much fun.”

Ghafoori, who plans to study biomedical science at the University of Windsor, said the hands-on experiences opened her eyes to new possibilities.

The event was led by associate dean of science for faculty and student engagement Dora Cavallo-Medved and Science Academy student leader Adam Bakos, with support from more than 100 undergraduate and graduate student volunteers, faculty, and staff.

“We are excited to host these bright students and offer them the chance to explore our academic programs and research,” said Cavallo-Medved. “They’ve been fully engaged and are already building connections with our faculty and students. We look forward to seeing them return as future Lancers.”

The week wrapped up with a career panel featuring successful alumni who shared insights about their journeys in science.

Students who attended all five days received a $1,000 entrance award applicable to any Faculty of Science program.
