Depression (Major Depressive Disorder; MDD) is a common illness worldwide, with approximately 4-5% of the Canadian population suffering with some form of depression. In the Windsor-Essex region, Windsor Regional Hospital -- Ouellette campus hospitalized 315 individuals with MDD and approximately 13.3% were admitted for psychiatric rehabilitation at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare (HDGH). One third of all patient who undergo a full treatment regimen fail to achieve remission (i.e., treatment resistance depression; TRD). To combat the failure to achieve remission, a non-invasive neurostimulation therapy, such as repeated transcranial magnetic simulation (rTMS), can be used in clinical practice with pharmacotherapy and as a potential alternative treatment strategy to aid in achieving remission. At HDGH, the implementation of rTMS services for in- and out-patient populations with mental health illness will be assessed, as well as other patient and staff outcomes.
Assessing the implementation of rTMS at HDGH will add to the growing literature of the effectiveness of rTMS in psychiatric populations and can change the services provided to psychiatric patients at HDGH. This study may also lead to a change in the standard of care for psychiatric patients trying to achieve TRD.
