About the Speakers

David Secko

David Secko previously worked as a science journalist for The Scientist magazine, Vancouver’s Tyee, the Science Creative Quarterly, Canadian Medical Association Journal and the U.S. Public Library of Science (PLoS). Dr. Secko now studies the future of science journalism, and is Chair and Professor of Journalism at Concordia University. He is the leader of the Concordia Science Journalism Project and the Projected Future program, Concordia’s experiential science journalism summer school. His education includes a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of British Columbia , and his MJ in Science Journalism from the University of British Columbia.

Janessa Griffith

Janessa Griffith is a faculty member in the Health Information Management program at Douglas College, British Columbia and a co-founder of CIHR's Institute for Gender and Health's Trainee Network. Having completed her PhD in Medical Science at the University of Toronto, Dr. Griffith’s research focuses on the appropriate use of healthcare resources to improve patient care. Recently, Dr. Griffith conducted research on vaccine hesitancy in Canada which gained national and international media coverage. She mobilized this research by creating an initiative to promote vaccine uptake in Canada, which was recognized by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam.
