WE-SPARK Health Institute has launched its 2026 Grants Competition, inviting health researchers across Windsor-Essex to apply for funding that supports early-stage health research, pilot projects, and collaborative training opportunities.
Through this annual competition, WE-SPARK aims to ignite discovery and strengthen the regional health research ecosystem by supporting new ideas that address important health challenges and improve care for communities in Windsor-Essex.
Applicants must have a primary affiliation with one of the five WE-SPARK partners: Erie Shores HealthCare, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, St. Clair College, University of Windsor or Windsor Regional Hospital.
Igniting Discovery Grants
The Igniting Discovery Grants provide seed funding to support novel, early-stage health research and education projects. These grants are designed to help researchers generate preliminary findings that can lead to larger research programs and future funding opportunities.
In addition to general health research funding, several priority calls are available through generous community and institutional sponsors, including:
• Cancer Research, funded by the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation
• Childhood Cancer Research, funded by ChildCan
• Community Health & Well-Being Research, funded by GreenShield
• Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Research, funded by the Katelyn Bedard Bone Marrow Association
• University of Windsor Priority Areas, co-funded by the University of Windsor Vice-President Research & Innovation and participating faculties.

The competition also includes IDEA Grants, which provide seed funding for small-scale pilot projects, preliminary studies, and quality improvement initiatives. These grants focus on generating critical early data and testing new approaches that address targeted health challenges. Priority is given to investigators who are in the early stages of developing their research programs.
New in 2026: Student Research Training Grant
A new Student Research Training Grant has been introduced for 2026. This special call will support short-term, high-impact training experiences that allow post-secondary students to develop new research skills, collaborate across institutions, and gain exposure to research environments beyond their usual academic setting.
This initiative is funded by the University of Windsor Students' Alliance and the St. Clair College Student Representative Council.
