WE-SPARK Health Institute’s next virtual Think Tank takes place on Friday, October 23, 2026, from 1 to 3 p.m. Topics include managing chemotherapy side effects, improving access to care for older adults, and using data to solve healthcare and community challenges.
Think Tanks bring researchers, healthcare providers, students and community partners together to exchange ideas and help move research forward. Anyone who enjoys solving problems is welcome to take part.
This month, three presenters will lead the following discussions. Participants are invited to choose one breakout session based on their interests and expertise.
Biology, Prevention, and Management of Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy
Presenter: Vikas Garg, MD, Windsor Regional Hospital
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common and often persistent side effect of certain chemotherapy treatments. Dr. Garg will introduce a research program at Windsor Regional Cancer Centre focused on improving its prevention, early detection and management.
The team is developing a practical risk-prediction model using patient-reported symptoms and treatment factors, and planning a pilot feasibility trial of compression applied around the time of chemotherapy infusions as an inexpensive prevention strategy.
Participants can help fine-tune the research questions and study design. This session may be of particular interest to those involved in symptom management, oncology nursing, rehabilitation and community-based cancer research.
Improving Health Equity Among Older Adults with Limited English Proficiency
Presenter: Wansoo Park, PhD, School of Social Work, University of Windsor
Building on a successful Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)-funded project, Dr. Park will explore ways to improve health equity for older adults with limited English proficiency in Windsor-Essex.
The discussion will look at community needs, barriers to accessing health and social services, and possible partnerships for future research and programs. Those with experience in seniors’ health, primary care, newcomer services, language and cultural supports, community outreach and health system navigation can bring helpful perspectives to the conversation.
From Data to Action: Solving Healthcare and Community Challenges through Analytics and Optimization
Presenter: Mehdi Najafi, PhD, Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering, University of Windsor
Dr. Najafi will introduce approaches that combine data analytics, machine learning and mathematical optimization to support better decisions.
Examples from healthcare operations, logistics, transportation and resource planning will show how these tools can improve patient flow, service delivery, supply chains and resource allocation. Participants can share challenges their organizations are facing and explore ways to work together on solutions.
Bring Ideas and Join the Conversation
Curiosity, experience and fresh ideas are all welcome. Participants do not need to have the answers, just an interest in helping researchers explore what comes next.
