This project aims to expand and evaluate the APEX program, an inclusive adapted physical exercise initiative designed for high school students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) in Windsor-Essex. Built on a successful university-based model, APEX brings leadership students and students with IDD together through peer-supported physical activity in local schools. This evaluation will explore the experiences of leadership student volunteers and teachers to better understand the impact of their involvement and identify best practices. The goal is to create a sustainability framework for broader program implementation across school boards.

This research will enhance inclusive physical activity programming by identifying how volunteer experiences shape attitudes toward students with IDD and support peer collaboration. Findings will inform sustainable, school-based exercise models that foster inclusion and engagement for all students. Ultimately, the project will help scale the APEX program across Windsor-Essex schools and contribute to social change in education and community health.
