Internationally recognized experts and local leaders came together to advance innovation and improve patient outcomes

Windsor-Essex continues to strengthen its reputation as a growing hub for health research and innovation, as the WE-SPARK Health Institute welcomed a full house to its annual Health Research Conference, held March 28 at Caesars Windsor.

The 2026 conference brought together 384 attendees, including researchers, clinicians, students, and community partners, creating a dynamic environment for collaboration, learning, and discovery.

At the heart of WE-SPARK’s success is its collaborative model, bringing together academic institutions and healthcare organizations to advance research and improve care. As Dr. Dora Cavallo-Medved, Interim Director of WE-SPARK Health Institute, explained, this shared approach is what drives meaningful impact.

“Because we are a partnership, and we’re doing it together, this is what is making the big impact of building health research. We can’t do it alone, the university and college can’t do it alone, and the hospitals can’t do it alone.”

She added that building a strong research ecosystem enables new advances in healthcare that directly translate into improved patient outcomes, and that this collaborative model is gaining attention across Canada.

The conference featured plenary presentations from internationally recognized experts, including Dr. Sunit Das, a neurosurgeon-scientist advancing brain tumour research; Dr. Ross Upshur, a leader in public health and bioethics; and Dr. Nikki Woods, a global expert in health professions education.

Across the day, 46 speakers shared their expertise through engaging presentations and discussions, while more than 140 research posters showcased innovative work from across the region and beyond. The conference also celebrated emerging talent, with 21 student awards presented, totaling $2,100 in recognition of outstanding research contributions.

Attendees had the opportunity to connect across disciplines, explore new ideas, and engage with research that is shaping the future of healthcare, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in addressing today’s most pressing health challenges.

WE-SPARK’s model brings together partners from across the region, including the University of Windsor, St. Clair College, Windsor Regional Hospital, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, and Erie Shores HealthCare. By bridging research, education, and clinical care, the institute continues to strengthen the local health research ecosystem while contributing to broader advancements in healthcare.

The annual conference remains a cornerstone event for the region, celebrating discovery, fostering partnerships, and inspiring the next generation of health researchers.
